The Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project provides free help with civil (non-criminal)
legal problems for low-income residents of Maine and for low-income residents
of other states who have a legal problem handled by a Maine court. We work
closely with other Maine civil legal services providers, each
with its own area of expertise. VLP typically assists with cases dealing with:
- Family law matters including divorce, child support and child custody
- Consumer law matters including personal bankruptcy and foreclosure
- Benefits matters including Social Security and unemployment compensation
- Personal injury, real estate and tax law
- VLP cannot provide help with criminal problems, drunk driving (OUI)
cases, and traffic violations.
It is very important to contact VLP as soon as you think you have a
legal problem. The earlier you contact us, the more help we are able to give
you. Even if you are not sure that your problem has a legal solution, call
VLP to find out what to do.
All VLP services are provided by trained community volunteers and volunteer
lawyers who generously donate their time. We do not have staff lawyers who represent clients.
We are limited in the services we can provide by the availability of volunteers.
