VLP operates a statewide toll-free Legal Hotline staffed by trained volunteers. Callers to the
Legal Hotline go through an intake interview which includes eligibility determination. Eligible callers are
provided with information about their legal problem over the phone, referrals to other organizations that
might help them and are sent client education materials.
Clients with family law matters may get additional help via the Family Law Helpline. Clients
who are representing themselves can schedule evening telephone appointments with volunteer lawyers to get
legal advice and assistance throughout the course of their case.
Approximately 10% of VLP clients are referred to a volunteer lawyer for pro bono representation.
VLP selects cases for pro bono referral based on the facts of the case and the availability of volunteer
lawyers in particular geographic areas or with the necessary legal expertise. Volunteer lawyers may provide
legal consultations, limited representation or full representation, depending on the case.
