Pine Tree Legal Assistance
represents low-income people in many civil cases. Pine Tree has offices in Portland, Augusta,
Lewiston, Bangor, Machias and Presque Isle. Pine Tree offices have tty capability, and access to
Language Line translation services.
The Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project
can refer low-income people to private attorneys in many civil cases, particularly those that aren't
handled by other legal services providers. The VLP has a toll free number to see if you are eligible
and whether they can help with your problem.
Legal Services for the Elderly helps socially and economically needy Maine seniors age 60 and over in many civil (non-criminal) cases. LSE has offices in Augusta, Bangor, Lewiston, Portland and Presque Isle, as well as a state-wide toll-free Hotline (voice, TTY and language line translation services). All of LSE's services are free and confidential.
The Disability Rights Center
helps people with problems related to a disability. The Disability Rights Center has an office
in Augusta and a state-wide toll free phone number (voice and tty).
The Immigrant Legal Advocacy Program helps low-income persons with immigration law
and related issues for for free or low fees. ILAP sees persons by appointment in Portland
and Lewiston and also has Friday walk-in consultations in Portland Fridays from 11:30 a.m.
to 4:30 p.m. ILAP serves people state-wide and can be reached by telephone through its
toll-free number.
The Maine Civil Liberties Union provides lawyers for people whose constitutional rights have been violated or who have been the victim of illegal discrimination. The MCLU also has a prisoner's rights project. Its cooperating attorneys do not charge their MCLU clients attorney's fees. The MCLU has only one office, in Portland, but takes cases from all over the state.
The Maine Lawyer Referral and Information
Service, for a $25 fee, can put people in touch with a lawyer who will
provide a free half-hour consultation. The Lawyer Referral Service has
a toll free phone number to its Augusta office.
The Cumberland Legal Aid Clinic, a program of the University of Maine School
of Law, is a small legal services provider, in which clients are represented by
"Student Attorneys," third-year law students specially licensed by the
state and federal courts to provide legal services to low-income clients. The
Student Attorneys practice under the supervision of fully-licensed attorney faculty
members. The Clinic represents low-income individuals with legal cases in Southern
Maine courts for most kinds of civil, criminal, juvenile, and family law matters.
