The widening foreclosure crisis around the country is reflected here at home, with an estimated 125 new foreclosure filings each month in Maine courts. The overwhelming majority of these homeowners cannot afford private counsel and are facing the loss of their home without any legal support. The Maine Attorneys Saving Homes [MASH] Project has been created with initial funding from the Maine Bar Foundation and the Maine Attorney General's Office to build capacity to respond to this need. Private attorneys are an essential part of this support system. Pine Tree Legal Assistance and the Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project offer several benefits that are designed to make pro bono work in this area more feasible. MASH participants will be expected to accept one pro bono case in this area of law each year. Interested participants are asked to confirm their willingness to take cases in this area via email to |
