Internships and Externships

VLP hosts interns and externs from local colleges and law schools nationwide. Availability of academic credit is dependent on each institution's policies. VLP has hosted academic interns from Bowdoin College, University of Southern Maine, University of Maine School of Social Work and University of Maine School of Law. Typically, interns spend part of their time on the Legal Helpline and also complete an independent project. Past projects have included:

  • Conducting client surveys
  • Helping to create or re-design training tools and manuals
  • Developing client brochures
  • Developing web-based volunteer schedule, newsletter, chat space
  • Organized training events
  • Research projects

VLP also hosts paid interns (usually during the summer) and work study students. Interns usually find funding through their academic institutions or outside fellowships. On occasion, VLP has had grant funding to support an intern.
