Community Volunteer Opportunities

You don't have to be a lawyer to help VLP provide legal aid to people in Maine! We depend on community volunteers to help us help others. We provide extensive training and support to our volunteers, so you don't need to be a legal expert. It's a great way to learn about the law and help make sure every Mainer has equal access to our justice system.

Here are some opportunities for community volunteers:

Legal Hotline - Our statewide Legal Hotline is staffed entirely by volunteers who are trained, supervised and supported by VLP staff. Volunteers answer phones in our Portland office, conducting client intake interviews and providing assistance and information to callers on their legal problems. Volunteer shifts are three hours long (mornings Monday - Friday or afternoons Monday - Thursday).

Interested? Fill out our Legal Hotline Volunteer Application.

Other Opportunities - VLP is a non-profit organization, so we always welcome help! If you have talent or interest in any of the following areas, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator and we'll be happy to put you to work.

  • Community Outreach
  • Fundraising and Events Planning
  • Writing and Reporting
  • Desktop Publishing
  • Press Relations
  • Office Administration and Data Entry
  • Website Design
  • Photography and Graphic Design

Friends of the VLP is a group of community volunteers committed to helping VLP achieve its mission by providing active support in all areas of operations, assisting with fundraising and public relations and serving as an ad hoc advisory group.
